What is resilience?
According to American Psychological Association – Resilience is the process of adapting well in the face of adversity to trauma tragedy, threats and extreme stress. Resilient people acknowledge the situation, learn from their mistakes and then move forward.
How do we know if we are resilient – do we recognise it in other people/ or your work colleagues?
What might be the characteristics that tell you someone is resilient? Here are a few ideas:
- Flexible thinking, Resilient people view difficult situations as a positive challenge. They look at mistakes as lessons to be learned from and opportunities for growth. They don’t view them as a negative reflection on their abilities or self- worth. focus on what you can do not what you can’t.
- Belief in strengths or self worth. Although things might go wrong, the ability to remain steady in one’s ability and past experience. This enables a person to have confidence to find ways to cope with what is currently difficult.
- Commitment: Resilient people are committed to their lives and their goals. This is not just a restriction to their work, they commit to their relationships. Friendships, causes they care about and religious + spiritual beliefsSharing and communicating but taking responsibility for tasks/actions. This links to the idea of being emotionally balanced and having a balanced lifestyle.
- Personal Control: Resilient people spend their time and energy focusing on situations and events they have control over. Because they put their efforts where they can have the most impact, they feel empowered and confident. Those whom spend time worrying about uncontrollable events can often feel lost, helpless and powerless to take action.
Why do we need to develop resilience?

Can a Group be defined as Resilient?
Someone can be resilient but be working within a team that is not working well together or is under undue stress. The environment might become toxic and the resilient individual is not able to resolve this situation so easily on their own. Resilience can relate to the team as a whole not just the individual. Resilience is as much a characteristic of a high functioning group as well as an individual.
We have focused recently on the Emergency Services and recognise that each day 999 workers are potentially going to be exposed to highly stressful situations where understanding, trust and support are necessary to provide high quality care.

Developing Team Resilience:
Here are some ideas:
Social Support – helps buffer the intensity of stress being felt by the team. Develop the sense of being part of a team and supporting each other – how?
Kindness to each other, being an ally not a critic, listening and offering advice in the spirit of support not having to take over. Don’t criticise when someone struggles but help them through it, provide confidence in them to try. Thinking about what is something that can be resolved on your own and what needs to be shared with others.
Shared values – The team need to know why they are doing certain tasks. When thinking about the Emergency Services, the role is to care or protect the public, it is seen often as a vocation. Whatever role you have at work, giving time reminding each other of why you do the job what is important about what you do and how it makes a difference can help develop the sense that you are all in it together. Have clarity of how the work contributes to the larger purpose. Feedback on what has been going well, share in this together.
Trust – When a team is working well – there is a trust in each other to share out the tasks and support each other. A reliance on each other with the knowledge tasks will be done. The importance of a good admin team, good reception staff, call centre staff as well as front line personnel to make a shift work smoothly and effectively. There is a sense that dividing the tasks can be trusted to be shared out between the group rather than always management led and each person in the group being aware of what each other is committed to and communicating that.
Solution focused– The ability to recognise when the mindset has become negative or when certain elements of the group are focusing on the aspects that are difficult to change. Being able to listen to all angles of a problem and be solution focused. The ability to have healthy debates in order to resolve an issue.
Good communication – As a Team be able to have informal forums to debate ideas and talk through differences without the fear of retribution. To accept and tolerate that not all your ideas will be used and have the spirit of the common goal of understanding and transparency to work through problems for the common good. Being able to offload but in a considered way that is supportive.
